Become a well-informed and better prepared candidate on the competitive academic job market. This panel of speakers have all been recently hired at UCR, and will discuss navigating an academic job search, the application process, job talks, and campus visits.

11:00 – 11:50 am | Concurrent Session I: Academic Salary Negotiation

Successfully negotiating your salary early on will set an important foundation for your entire academic career. Learn about the important information you should consider before negotiation and effective strategies to receive the benefits you deserve.

2A: An Introduction to Academic Cover Letters
The Graduate Writing Center Coordinator will discuss the basics of writing an effective academic cover letter. Learn strategies to best market your academic skills and professional accomplishments to a hiring committee. This session will be catered specifically towards graduate students at all levels.

2B: Advanced Academic Cover Letter Clinic
Bring the announcements for any jobs you’re applying to, and a draft of your cover letter! You will work in shortened, individual consultations with our Graduate Writing Center consultants to develop your academic job cover letter and tailor it to fit specific positions. This session will be catered specifically towards graduate students entering the job market this year. Space is limited.

3A: Diversity & Inclusion in Academia

Lack of diversity in academic positions continues to be an issue within STEM and CHASS departments in universities across the country. During this panel, you will learn about faculty experiences on the job market and their perspectives of diversity within their field.

3B: Interview Preparation

Interviews don’t have to be a nerve-wracking experience. Learn tips for presenting yourself well during both in-person and Skype interviews. Preparation will make you a more confident interviewee.

3:00 – 3:50 pm | Plenary Session: Post-Doctoral Panel

Post-doctoral positions are becoming increasingly important to stay competitive on the academic job market. This panel invites UCR post-doctoral fellows to share thoughts about how these positions may fit into a larger academic career trajectory. They may also discuss experiences around the search and application process, position requirements, and time management. Make sure to bring your questions!
