Now Accepting Digital Humanities Fellowship Applications

By Yelda Serin and Madeleine St. Marie |

Yes, you heard the name “GradQuant” and you’ve seen the emails about workshops on causal inference or machine learning in Python. You may have even visited the GradQuant space for various workshops and meetings. However, you’ve never actually been to GradQuant on purpose…because you’re a humanist or social scientist! What does GradQuant have to do with the humanities or social sciences, you ask?

Well, buckle your seat belts, folks – GradQuant is for everybody. Since Fall 2016, GradQuant has provided support, resources, workshops, and a fellowship in digital humanities to graduate students in social sciences and the humanities. Visit our DH page to learn more about GradQuant’s DH program.

An important part of this program is the Digital Humanities Fellowship! This fellowship will be awarded to between two - four UCR graduate students. This fellowship supports these students as they attend the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria in British Columbia during the month of June 2020.

The purpose of the DH Fellowship is two-fold:

  1. To enhance the student’s own research methodologies
  2. To disseminate the knowledge of a chosen digital method to other graduate students

DHSI will take place in two sessions on June 1-5, 2020 and June 8-12, 2020 at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. While at DHSI, fellows will attend a week-long course to learn or further hone their digital research skills.

Our past fellows attended courses, such as Extracting Cultural Networks from Thematic Research Collections, Feminist Digital Humanities: Theoretical, Social, and Material Engagement, Introduction to Computational Humanities, Geographical Information Systems in the Digital Humanities, Web APIs with Python, Digital Storytelling, and Introduction to Network Analysis in the Digital Humanities. We are hoping to expand the selection of courses our fellows attend in 2020!

The fellowship will include:

  • Registration for one course at DHSI in June 2020; travel; accommodations; and meals
  • Opportunity for a 10% paid appointment in GradQuant (4 hours per week) during the 2020-21 academic year

The successful applicant will be expected to register and attend the selected course at DHSI and develop at least two workshops in digital research methods for humanities and social sciences, deliver said workshops over the course of the 2020-21 academic year. DH fellows will also have the opportunity to be hired as a part-time consultant offering individual consultations and collaborative office hours in GradQuant during the 2020-21 academic year.
