Why Do You Want to Work for GradSuccess?

By Hillary Jenks |

Hey UCR grad students! Are you looking for summer employment, funding for the next academic year, or just a way to earn some extra money in addition to your TAship? Hoping to expand your administrative skill set? Interested in improving the graduate student experience at UCR?

If you answered YES to any (or better yet, all) of these questions, GradSuccess may be for you!

What’s GradSuccess, you ask? GradSuccess is a unit of Graduate Division devoted to supporting grad students during their time at UCR through a diverse range of programs, events, expert consultations, and peer support. We mentor first-year students, train TAs, help you with problems in programming and statistics, offer writing assistance, and put on quarterly After Grad professional development events.

Oh and…the tacos and miniature ponies at Stress Relief Fair? That’s us too!

So read on for the top five reasons that you, too, might want to join the GradSuccess team….

  1. Make New Friends!

Your GradSuccess co-workers are other smart, ambitious folks pursuing graduate degrees all across the disciplines. Plus, they have cute pets, wacky hobbies, mad baking skills, and ridiculous stories about their siblings. We bring together humor, knowledge, and caffeine in the GradSuccess office, and we have a lot of fun.

  1. Free Food. Lots of Free Food.

Let’s start with the fact that the GradSuccess office has free coffee and snacks for all grad students, from 9 to 5, Monday through Thursday. Then there’s all the events where getting fed is part of the job – orientations, stress relief fairs, After Grad days, coffee socials, visiting speakers, and so on. And did I mention your peers’ mad baking skills?

  1. Try Something New

You may not know when. You may not know how. But you can be sure that, at some point, working in GradSuccess will involve doing something you’ve never done before. Whether it’s driving the electric cart, walking on a reflexology stone mat, introducing the Chancellor, or building a fire (true story), every day in GradSuccess is a new opportunity for adventure!

  1. Know Your Schedule

Tired of 72-hour grading marathons and 2am emails? At GradSuccess, you get a consistent schedule, and you’ll never have to bring your work home with you (including email). Coordinators and Lead Consultants are expected to work an average of twenty hours per week.

  1. Expand Your Skill Set

Ever been responsible for hiring dozens of workers? Overseen a six-figure budget? Planned an event for 400 people? Managed a project, collaborated on a team, or provided consultations? Working at GradSuccess allows you to gain concrete experience in a wide range of skills that have value both within and beyond the academy.
